...Ahh now THAT's a snow day

Well, this 2014 has been interesting so far.  It snowed.  And then is snowed again.  And it snowed some more.  School has been closed for 8 days due to weather, or the potential for bad weather this year.  One of the winter storms ended up being called "snowmageddon."   This snow was reminiscent of the big traffic jam snow of 2005.  That horrible storm was 1 1.5 inches of pure ice and shut Raleigh down.  It took me about 2 hours to go 4 miles.  Poor Darrell was on the road for 6 hours before he got home.  This time, while it was a little better because schools were closed, it still took Darrell 2 1/2 hours to get home!  But I digress.   I am not posting about that snow.   That snow was about 4 inches of snow covered in 2 inches of sleet, then a bit more snow.  It was wet and mess, and this mama wanted nothing to do with it.

The snow I am posting about took place about 2 weeks ago.  The kids really enjoyed playing in the snow.  Riley even got to join in!  He seemed to really like the snow cream the best.  You can see from his face that he was not a happy camper when it was gone.

Snow Day!

Well, as close as we usually get here in NC.  We started our little snow day out by having homemade chocolate chip muffins for breakfast.  Even little Riley got to enjoy a muffin!

Then, when Riley went down for a nap, I bundled up the big kids and took them outside to see the snow.  There wasn't even enough to play with, but they had fun making the snow crunch under their feet.

Max found a snowy leaf in the yard.  We tried to capture the way it sparkled in the sunshine, but it didn't really work!

After we warmed up with some nice homemade hot chocolate, we made snow pictures with glue and salt.  Max made a snowman, and Alexis's was more of a free-form art.  We don't get very many snow days around here, so I made the most of the little dusting we did get.  Thanks to Riley for napping so long that we got to have so much fun.

Riley at 11 months and some outdoor fun

I am a little late posting about Riley's 11month milestone.  He is getting busier (and naughtier) by the minute!  He is such a delight.   We had a great time playing outside yesterday while the weather was still warm.  Riley got to ride in the wagon and on Mater (a gift to Max for his first birthday - which is still one of the most popular outdoor toys we have.)

A last little Hoorah!

This is the last day we will be able to enjoy as a family (well just the kiddos and me) before my big boy heads back for his 3rd quarter of Kindergarten.  we decided to celebrate by heading to Menchies for some frozen yogurt.  Riley had his first taste of the treat.  He loved it!  I think the other two might have as well.  :)      After we were finished, we headed next door to browse at the pet store.  Alexis loved the birds, and Max loved the fish.

What is better than a HUGE cardboard box?

Not much.  Just ask Max and Alexis!  They had a blast setting their imaginations free while playing with this one:
